Rufina Taproom & The Outstanding Citizens Collective Present:
\\ K.Dutch & The Fat Sweet //
K.Dutch & The Fat Sweet is Santa Fe’s newest hip-hop band. Influenced by myriad points along the musical spectrum, their live performance pairs inspired, socially-conscious lyrics against a delectable backdrop of fat, sweet, oily goodness. Bassist Neal Denton (Shake Alert, Kabomba!) serves up unctuous bass lines along with an occasional deep-fried funky feature. Multi-instrumentalist Kevin Sennott (Shake Alert) stirs in crispy guitar licks and mind-melding synth explorations from outer space. Drummer Joe Hecker (Greg Butera Band) brews up tasty, artisanal grooves that keep the body trim and the vibe intoxicating.
Rounding out the quartet is vocalist K.Dutch (K.C. Dutcher), who blends bitter verses and syrupy hooks into an addictively positive main course. A DIY composer, writer and vocalist who draws on influences from classic hip-hop, R&B, electronic pop, reggae and upbeat soul music, K.Dutch inhabits a musical niche best described as “hip pop soul.” Originally from the east coast, K.Dutch has spent the past six years in Santa Fe. He is also the vocalist for Santa Fe Afrobeat outfit Shake Alert, and has collaborated with local artists Will Dyar and the Outstanding Citizens Collective.
In the summer of 2016, K.Dutch spent a week in the Allagash Wilderness in Maine, holding a question about what and where home is. He walked away from that experience with the seeds of his debut album, Always Home, which was released in November of 2017. Over 15 months, K.Dutch worked around the edges of a busy life, producing tracks on a laptop computer and recording vocals on a hand-me-down mic in a dingy corner of his garage. On Always Home, K.Dutch takes an honest and self-critical look at the state of the world, reflecting on his impact as a father and an educator, and inspiring others to act in support of the planet and its future generations.
Always Home has received early critical praise. The Santa Fe arts weekly Santa Fe Reporter described the music on Always Home as, “’90s R&B-reminiscent backing beats or subtle nods to reggae and lo-fi East Coast titans of rap like Biggie or Wu Tang,” and rated it “pretty close to excellent,” while recognizing that K.Dutch’s lyrics “remind us that we have power if we care to grasp it.” In the album’s latest single, “I Get Over,” Toronto music blog A Night in the 6ix heard “a meditation on the challenge of ordinary life in an extraordinary time.”
K.Dutch & The Fat Sweet will host an album release event at Rufina Taproom in Santa Fe on December 13, 2017. CDs will be available for purchase that evening, and digital content is always on sale at Bandcamp. The band is working on a performance schedule for early 2018…keep an eye out for them at future events!
