As is sometimes the case in far-flung romantic artist locales like Taos, the latest crop of transplants includes some seriously talented and accomplished musicians, songwriters and singers. What’s unusual about this particular batch, however, is that they found each other and with seemingly gravitational force have formed a new band that’s all but a certain to be a new local addiction.
Meet Braided. Canadian recording artist Awna Teixeira; accompanied on vocals by Sarah Ellis; and backed by Austin-born Mirror Travel band members: Lauren Green on drums; Tiffanie Lanmon on lead guitar and Meredith Stoner on bass. On November 12, at Taos Mesa Brewing, Braided will make their local debut, playing mostly songs written and recorded by Teixeira and released on her 2015 “Wild One” album, which London’s “The Daily Telegraph,” named amongst the “Best Country Music Albums.” Teixeira, who has amassed her own following in various folk, southwest and Canadian circles, landed in Taos with Ellis last December, a much needed reprieve for the artists’ who’d been touring for years. Thanks to a chance encounter with Stoner, the duo made friends straightaway with all of Mirror Travel, who despite having left Texas, are often called back to tour and play festivals like SXSW. Now, after a mini-regional tour through southern New Mexico, Braided is ready to unveil their project in their adopted home of Taos. Go to this show and expect to have your mind blown. Softly. Braided offers a hazy depth to wade into slowly. Left alone Teixeira’s voice is otherworldly; when Ellis joins in she manages to somehow perfect what was already perfect. The trio of Mirror Travel as the backing band seals the whole deal as a group that looks, feels and sounds like they’re only swinging through on a world tour.
