Somehow, three months have already passed by in 2016. The darkness of Winter is giving way to new life in Spring. In order to press forward, I’d first like to look back at the first three months of 2016. Undoubtedly, a massive shadow looms large with the unexpected loss of David Bowie. But the icon did not leave without saying goodbye. Written and recorded while aware of his impending departure, in Blackstar Bowie left the world with his finest album in decades. In addition to Bowie, the world lost hip hop luminary Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest as well as major names like Pierre Boulez, Glenn Frey, Paul Kantner, George Martin, and Keith Emerson.

Fortunately, 2016 hasn’t been nothing but sad farewells. Kendrick Lamar dropped another masterpiece unexpectedly, while collaborators Anderson .Paak and Adrian Younge both added to the amazing run of neo soul/hip hop coming out of Los Angeles. Meanwhile, new records by The Drones, Money, and Mass Gothic have been in constant rotation.

Locally, in Santa Fe, the arrival of Meow Wolf’s new art complex and performance venue has brought new life to the city, including really memorable performances from CocoRosie and The Handsome Family.

Looking forward, I hope to further expand the coverage of Mecca Lecca with the addition of new contributing voices, and increased focus on local concerts and album releases.
