WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

Folk music is of the people and for the people. Christopher Paul Stelling lives and breathes folk music in its purest sense. Set to earthly tones, an old weathered guitar is plucked hypnotically to form age old patterns, over which Stelling emotive voice speaks sincerely about love, life, death, struggle. His third album to date, Labor Against Waste is also his most full sounding. While the heart and soul of the record is simply the man and his guitar, there’s so much additional detail to soak in, from the complimentary backing vocals of Julia Christgau to the occasional mandolin flourishes of Zack Bruce to Kieran Ledwidge’s sensitive violin strokes. On Labor Against Waste, Christopher Paul Stelling has reigned himself in a bit, trading in some of the unhinged fire of his past records for a refined patience and reflection. And yet there’s still enough of that manic energy to conjure the stampede that is “Horse.” It’s an album that, while sincerely entrenched in a great dusty American music tradition, decides to push forward on its own narrative path rather than tread those same old tired roads.
