WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
Spacey keyboard sounds and a sense of joyous celebration are not things you expect to emerge from a nation torn apart by civil war and catastrophic levels of sexual violence. Yet that’s what’s heard on From Kinshasa, the debut album of the first band I’ve ever heard to emerge from The Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s not surprising though that Mbongwana Star has developed a sound that feels completely unique to themselves. While a lineage to classic Afro-funk and Mande Music can be drawn, the band inventively meshes those classic African styles with inventive use of electronics to create an album that’s stylistically diverse and adventurous. As Alexis Petridis of The Guardian noted in his review, From Kinshasa possesses a hypnotic element which personally makes for a psychedelic music experience beyond anything else I’ve heard emerge from the vast continent of Africa.
